I would like to live in the River Cafe. A perfectly decorated cottage like place, full of Canadiana furniture and decorations set in the middle of an island park – it feels like home to me.
Besides the contented and cozy atmosphere, there is the food. Using locally grown food and connecting with the farmers from where River Cafe’s ingredients come from, this restaurant’s menu is a reflection of Canada’s food landscape.
Saturdays and Sundays feature River Cafe’s brunch menu and offers a slightly different array of food. Offering more breakfast like items like yogurt and granola and varieties of egg dishes, it makes choosing just one meal very difficult.
After realizing it would take a while to choose our dishes, we decided to order a starter so we could munch while we pondered. We chose the Fresh Baked Muffins and Pastries to share.
We were served a pumpkin spice muffin with cream cheese, a pear, caramel and cream cheese pastry, and a toasted gouda croissant with basil inside. I’m not sure there’s a word to use to describe how flavourful, fresh and tasty these treats were.
After feeling quite full with our starter, we finally both decided on ordering the Fresh Farm Eggs Any Style with Herbed Potato Hash, House Cured Bacon, and Toast.
The meal was delicious. The medium poached eggs were made exactly to order and the hash was tasty – not drowned in oil as I have had at other restaurants.
When the server brought over our plates, she didn’t ask which order belonged to who, which was a nice touch.
Our waitress was friendly and made conversation easy. The warmth of the restaurant was welcoming and comfortable. Take some time this weekend and venture over to the River Cafe. It will warm your stomach and your soul.
