Diner Deluxe is one of those places that you need to visit. No, let me rephrase that… you HAVE to visit. Its charm and distinct feeling will entertain you and leave you wanting more. Located off Edmonton Trail and 7 Ave NE, its an easy spot to get to if you’re passing through Calgary on the highway.
Diner Deluxe opened in 2001 but the atmosphere will make you feel like its been around since your grandparents were teenagers. Its a throwback to the 50′s and you can really feel it. As you walk in, Diner Deluxe’s individuality shines with multi coloured vintage vinyl chairs, blankets for when customers have to queue up outside and a china cabinet full of vintage trinkets like model cars and alarm clocks.
My friend Sarah told me about this place a few years ago but I didn’t have a chance to come until we decided to celebrate our May birthdays here. The atmosphere of Diner Deluxe was very relaxed and calm. The music wasn’t too loud and the chatter was at a comfortable volume. The service was great; relaxed yet efficient. They took our orders and served our food with kindness and even with multiple servers waiting on us I never felt harassed or bothered. It seemed to me that they had definitely mastered the art of waiting on tables.
I ordered the Macaroni and Cheese with Sundried Tomatoes, Basil Pesto and Aged White Cheddar while Sarah ordered the Deluxe Veggie Burger.
The food was really nice. In my mind macaroni and cheese should be drenched in melted cheese so I was a little disappointed in this version as the cheese was a bit sparse but the garlic toast was the best I’ve ever had. Most, if not all of the bread served at Diner Deluxe is supplied by their neighbour Urban Bakery which included the multigrain buttered toast I enjoyed.
Of course, being a Birthday Celebration Night Out, we needed dessert. I decided on the Banana Split with home made ice cream and Sarah chose the Chocolate Bomb which included about five different variations of sweet chocolate somethings.
Needless to say, the desserts were delicious. If you ever want a nice dessert on the town check out Diner Deluxe. Actually, if you ever want a nice dessert AND a nice meal to go with it, visit Diner Deluxe… it will make your week.
